The brilliance of The Beach Boys music is in its simplicity, so simple that their music is unforgettable and forever. Simple? So simple, in fact, that it is nearly       impossible for another band to accurately reproduce their complex harmonies and timeless melodies. Of the thousands of bands since the Beach Boys, how many have covered their sound with the same impact? It is a challenge to name more than just a few. One evening not too long ago, four professional musicians and vocalists sat around a summer beach campfire listening to those great recordings of The Beach Boys. Led by musician/actor Grant Wilson, they decided then and there to form a group dedicated to faithfully re-creating the music of America’s Band. Not an easy task by any measure but many fun hours of rehearsals later, this group of players and singers broke through. When Chris Farmer, former musical director and 12 year member of The Beach Boys heard the band and immediately asked to join, they knew they had achieved their goal. Hearing is believing! With their white pants, blue striped shirts, and black Beatle boots, Surfin’ USA faithfully recreates the early look and music of America’s Band, The Beach Boys.

AUDITIONS OPEN FOR “THE SOUND OF MUSIC” THEATER CLASSIC

Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival

Producer-Director Wayne Scott has announced auditions for “The Sound of Music,” the fully staged Broadway musical, with music and lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein, for this year’s Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival.  Scott has scheduled the open auditions for adults on two weeknights, Tuesday,  April  23 and Thursday, April 25, from 6 to 9p.m. as well as children’s auditions on Saturday, April 27 from 10a.m. to 1p.m.  The auditions will be held at First Congregational Church, 2 W. Olive, in Redlands.

“The auditions are handled on a first come, first served basis, without appointments,” said Scott.  “All roles are open at this time.”

The Saturday, April 27 audition date will also include call backs from 2p.m. to 4p.m. for select actors who are called back after first auditioning during the previous main audition periods.  A limited number of appointments may also be scheduled on this day for actors unable to appear at the previous audition times.

Those auditioning should be prepared to sing 16 measures of any Broadway music-style song, preferably from “The Sound of Music.”  They must bring their own sheet music in their key, and Scott will provide an accompanist.  He will not be prepared to handle electronic sound, such as CDs, and no a cappella singing will be considered.

In addition to singing, Scott may ask those auditioning to interpretively recite the lyrics of their song; memorization is not necessary as they may refer to the music.  Auditioners may also be asked to perform a single dance routine taught at the auditions.

Roles available for those auditioning include the iconic characters:  Maria Rainer, Captain Georg von Trapp, The von Trapp Children (Leisl, Louisa, Friedrich, Brigitta, Kurt, Marta and Gretl), Rolf Gruber, Uncle Max Detweiler, The Mother Abbess, Nuns, Servants, Soldiers and Aristocrats.

The musical will be performed with a live orchestra and presented at 8:15p.m. on Tuesday, July 30 (dress rehearsal) and Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights,  August 1 through 3.

After the cast is selected, Scott and his production staff will hold an orientation meeting the evening of Tuesday, May 14 and rehearsals begin the following night.  The cast will rehearse at the Redlands Bowl as often as possible.

Scott encourages people interested in back stage and technical staff work to also come on the scheduled audition days.  He has already secured some positions, including Choreographer Dustin Ceithamer, Stage Manager Sally Inglis, Assistant Director Nathan Prince, Scenic Designer Tim Mahoney and Conductor Nolan Livesay.
